Description:

A briliant recording and presentation tool. Voki allows us to create avatars (or mini-me characters) that speaks for us. We can either type in the text or record our voices to get them to say it for us.

Suggested Curriculum Applications:

Another application to do the good old Oral Presentation, especially for the shy ones. Instead of standing in front of the classroom, students can present their oral presentation by way of recording it and having the mini-me character speak it for them. THey also have the option of typing in the text to practice pronunciation!

Roadtested by:

Hans Moningka and the Year 10 Indonesian class.

Registration requirements/To use:

You need to have an email account, and then register yourself to the website. This includes all the students to be able to use the website. In order to publish the final product, you will require either a Blog, a Wiki to embed it in, or publish it in MySpace or Facebook.

Pitfalls:

  • The text option is limited in characters, so to do a long bit of essay is a bit impossible, unless you do it in parts.
  • The voice recording option is more viable although still limited, as it allows up to 1 minute of recording. The only way around it is to pre-record in any other media, and just insert it as an audio file.
  • Students tend to spend a bit more time than they should in making their avatars - make sure we keep this under control.
  • Sometimes the laptop would not recognise the microphone/headset, making it hard to record. Make sure that the laptop and microphone/headset is working properly.
